About

The interest of this department is to detect and identify viruses, phytoplasmas bacteria, and fungi that infect strategic fruit crops and vegetables in Lebanon, and develop improved management strategies for their control to reduce crop losses caused by them.

Activities

  • Evaluation of the sanitary status of the major strategic crops (potato, wheat, tomato, pepper, bean, sugar beet, cucurbitaceous, etc.) and fruit trees (olives,stone fruits, pome fruits, grapevine, citrus, etc.) in Lebanon: field inspections, laboratory analysis, epidemiology and characterization of diseases, mainlyviral and phytoplasma diseases in collaboration with European Institutes and Universities
  • Identification and characterization of viral and phytoplasma diseases and their agents by biological assays (indexing on wood indicator plants and use of herbaceous hosts), serological assays (ELISA, DTBIA, electron microscopy,IF, etc.) and molecular assays (PCR, RFLP, molecular hybridization, dsRNA, real-time LAMP, etc.)
  • General techniques for identification of bacterial and fungal diseases done by isolation techniques, serological, molecular and pathogenecity tests
  • Certification activities (production of certified plant propagation materiel, etc.)
  • Interest on Emerging and Quarantine Diseases of Mediterranean Fruit andVegetable Crops (Brown rot and ring rot on potato, Fire blight, Plum poxvirus, Phytoplasma diseases, Xylella fastidiosa, etc.).
  • Interest on Integrated Pest Management (IPM)
  • Interest on climate change impact on agricultural pests and diseases
