V.1- Mission:  The main objective is to study the characterization of most medicinal plants originated in Lebanon and Syria, their composition and effect on human and vegetal health.

V.3- On Going Projects:

V.3. 1- The Identification of the main components of Micromeria barbata, its Anti-Microbial Effects, Antioxidant Activities and Toxicity.

The main objective is to study the characterization of the main components of Micromeria barbata (endemic plant from Lebanon), the efficiency against some pathogenic bacteria gram(+), gram(-) and yeasts, the antioxidant activities and the determination of the LD/50 to evaluate its toxicity in order to benefit from using it in pharmacy and food preserving.

Duration: 2 years.

V.3. 2- The Identification of the main components of Prangos asperula, its Anti-Microbial Effects, Antioxidant Activities and Toxicity.

The main objective is to study the characterization of the main components of Prangos asperula (endemic plant from Lebanon), the efficiency against some pathogenic bacteria gram(+), gram(-) and yeasts, the antioxidant activities and the determination of the LD/50 to evaluate its toxicity in order to benefit from using it in pharmacy and food preserving.

Duration: 2 years.

V.3. 3- The Identification of the main components of Gundelia tournefortii, its Anti-Microbial Effects, Antioxidant Activities and Domestication.

The main objective is to study the characterization of the main components of Gundelia tounefortii (Akoub, wild origin thistles are edible plant from the steppe regions and outstanding flavor), the efficiency against some pathogenic bacteria gram(+), gram(-) and yeasts, the antioxidant activities in order to benefit from using it in pharmacy and food preserving and needs to be cultivated to preserve them from extension.

Duration: 2 years.

V.3. 4- The Identification of the main components of Capparis spinosa L., its Anti-Microbial Effects, Antioxidant Activities.

The main objective is to compare the composition and biological effects of Capparis spinosa L. wild species with the cultivated one.

Duration: 3 years.

V.4- Previous Outstanding Achievements:

Studies on several Lebanese medicinal plants, such as:

Salvia libanotica, Hypericum thymifolium, Origanum syriacum, Malva sylvestris, Lavandulah stoechas, Rosemarinus officinalis, Nigella sativa, Ferula hermonis, Pimpinella anisum, Matricaria chamomilla, Carum carvi, Cerotonia siliqua, Cuminum cyminum, Foeniculum vulgare, Géranium pélargonium, Laurus nobilis, Lavandulah stoechas, Origanum marjorana, Micromeria barbata, Micromeria myrthifolia, Myrtus communis, Lippia citriodora and others…

V.5- Planned Activities of Unit:

To study main wild herbal and medicinal plants that endemically grow in Lebanese and Syria areas in order to encourage the tendency to return to Mother Nature in scientific way and to be a sustainable resource for the Lebanese economy.
